Amandeep's Story... "I have had a phobia of needles for as long as I can remember. The earliest memory I have is when I was about four and running around the nurse’s office while she chased me to give me a jab. When I was about 8 or 9, I had to have an injection in school for meningitis or MMR, and I started screaming. Teachers tried to calm me, and eventually had to call my mum in. I tried to go again, and started screaming and shouting. Six nurses had to pin me to the floor as I was kicking and waving my arms about. That whole experience just furthered my anxiety and traumatised me.
As soon as I'm in a room and I know I have I'm about to have an injection, I freak out and can't control my anxiety. I've always had issues with needles and it was only recently – when I was meant to go for a blood test and didn't do it out of fear – that I decided that I had to sort the problem out. I decided to visit Russell's hypnotherapy clinic and after the first couple of sessions I felt more relaxed and when I thought about past experiences I wasn't so stressed out about those memories. The 'biggest' breakthrough came on Christmas Eve when I had my ears pierced for the first time. I never thought I would have ever done that, because I associate the process of my ears being pierced with the same process of having an injection. But I did it, and even better – I was so calm and relaxed when I had it done. In the past, I would have jumped out of my chair as soon as I saw the ear piercing thing and wouldn't have let anyone come near me. I would have become really nervous and very anxious and stressed, but I was laughing and joking with the assistant, and if anyone had seen me, they definitely would not have guessed that I had/have issues with needles and piercings!"
