Blushing

Some of us remember exactly where and when we first blushed and for others it has been a life-long problem that has interfered with our careers and social lives. The fact is everyone blushes at times, but for some people the thought of blushing causes much emotional stress.

Whatever the reason, many who suffer from the fear of blushing and the extent of this distressing condition is evident by the many enquiries we receive. Clients often express that just talking about their problem with someone who has insight in to this distressing condition is a great relief. Providing support with practical advice and techniques to reduce facial blushing can make a significant impact on the quality of lives for many sufferers.

So why do we blush in the first place?
Blushing tends to start around the age of eight onwards when we start to be more aware of what others think of us with the condition becoming more severe in adolescence.
Common thought processes held by clients include that they may be judged negatively if they blush or that their blushing will be confirmation that that they are socially inadequate, shy, weak or immature. Paradoxically the fear of blushing can increase the activity of the autonomic nervous system which causes a person to blush in the first place. Whatever the reason you blush, it can become a symptom that interferes with your social and work life.

Why Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy?
Blushing is often attributed to social phobia, the fear of being judged or criticised by other people. Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy takes a unique approach to tackling this disabling problem. It provides long-term relief because it deals with the psychological causes that stimulate blushing.

Facial blushing is caused by over-activity of the sympathetic nervous system which is triggered by thoughts about events in your life that trigger the cycle of blushing. Thoughts such as "I must not blush", "oh no I’m blushing", "what will people think", "people will think I'm silly or embarrassed". And so the cycle continues – the thoughts create the trigger and the trigger creates the thoughts.

We will teach you to intercept these thoughts on a conscious and unconscious level, breaking the cycle that maintains your blushing. Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy helps you to reduce facial blushing or erythrophobia (fear of blushing). It will help your ability to cope with stressful situations and anxiousness.

In severe cases, facial blushing may cause social anxiety syndrome (SAD), social phobias and depression. The emotional or social stimuli that elicit such anxieties may manifest themselves in various ways – some people sweat profusely, while others fidget nervously or blush uncontrollably. Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy will help you to control your blushing by altering the way you think and feel in uncomfortable situations. The therapy not only helps you to build your confidence but helps you engage different emotions and therefore different reactions to those situations that normally trigger blushing. It aims to reprogram your unconscious mind so that your automatic response in these situations is one of comfort. As a result you will feel more at ease and more relaxed and have a greater sense of control over your reactions.
