Depression

Depression is a serious illness and far more than just feeling down in the dumps or having the blues. The feelings of sadness attributed to depression can be so severe that they impact on your daily life and your health, causing yet more suffering and setting in motion a downward spiral.

Depression is more common than people realise – about 15 per cent of people will suffer from depression at some point – and because many people do not seek help or are ashamed of being depressed, that figure could be substantially higher.

Depressed person

In general women tend to suffer from depression more often than men, but it is men who are more likely to commit suicide because of it. Depression is also more likely of there is a family history of the condition.

People who suffer from depression have described it as a dark curtain of despair, others lose their energy or motivation, suffer from loss of sleep or become irritable.

Depression is not a weakness or a failure of some form and it certainly isn't a "pretend" illness. The effects of depression can be far-reaching and have devastating consequences beyond that of just the sufferer. Family and friends can also be affected and the sufferer's mental and physical health can be put to serious risk.

Symptoms of depression
Extreme sadness
A sense of isolation or loneliness
Lethargy
Insomnia
Weight loss or gain through under or over-eating
Shame, guilt and a loss of self-esteem
Suicidal thoughts or tendencies

Can hypnotherapy help with my depression?
Depression sufferers in general respond well to the techniques of hypnotherapy. We all have the ability to think and feel differently and it is taking control of this ability which is fundamental to resolving depression issues. Hypnotherapy helps the sufferer focus away from reality and, in a manner similar to daydreaming, to focus on positive images, thoughts and feelings. Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy enables sufferers of depression to heal themselves, exchanging the destructive triggers and behaviours with positive energies and strategies to bring about a happier, lighter future. Habitual responses and perspectives of past experiences are reprogrammed so that they exhibit themselves in a positive manner. The aim of hypnotherapy is not just to manage the problem, it is to resolve the issue completely.
