Depression Depression is a serious illness and far more than just feeling down in the dumps or having the blues. The feelings of sadness attributed to depression can be so severe that they impact on your daily life and your health, causing yet more suffering and setting in motion a downward spiral. Depression is more common than people realise – about 15 per cent of people will suffer from depression at some point – and because many people do not seek help or are ashamed of being depressed, that figure could be substantially higher.
In general women tend to suffer from depression more often than men, but it is men who are more likely to commit suicide because of it. Depression is also more likely of there is a family history of the condition. People who suffer from depression have described it as a dark curtain of despair, others lose their energy or motivation, suffer from loss of sleep or become irritable. Depression is not a weakness or a failure of some form and it certainly isn't a "pretend" illness. The effects of depression can be far-reaching and have devastating consequences beyond that of just the sufferer. Family and friends can also be affected and the sufferer's mental and physical health can be put to serious risk. Symptoms of depression Can hypnotherapy help with my depression?
