Guilt Guilt is a normal part of being human – it gives us a release in understanding right from wrong and can help us determine a path whereby we learn from our mistakes aiming for a happier, balanced life. However, when these feelings of remorse or responsibility for our behaviour chip away until they become unhealthily prominent then the repercussions can be damaging to our mental and physical health. Feelings of guilt can make people ill. The conviction that they deserve to be punished for their actions can be so strong that it causes sufferers of guilt depression, withdrawal and anxiety. What needs to be done is create a sense of reason where the feelings of guilt are put in their place and do not become exaggerated or disproportionate to the initial cause.
True guilt is a realisation of the conscience that something "wrong" has been done or taken place. False guilt brings the same feelings but for an action or incident that the "guilty" person was not responsible for or didn't take place. The truth is that many people feeling the burden of guilt are experiencing guilt underservedly. Indeed, some people may even feel guilty for something that may not have even happened yet – this is known as borrowed guilt. Excessive guilt can sometimes become too much for us to bear – it prevents the sufferer from forgiving themselves, tying them to the past and creating a fear of the future. Guilt is often associated with bereavement and a sense of not being able to put right or revisit situations that we feel remorseful about. Why do we feel guilty? How can hypnotherapy help? Hypnotherapy can also take a more direct approach, and rather than delving into the past tackles the unwanted behaviour and thoughts and eliminates them. Through Neuro Linguistic Programming the mind learns how to react in different ways and put a new perspective on guilt, lifting the burdens that guilt brings.
