Pain Management

We have all suffered from pain at some point, whether caused by an injury, infection or illness. Sadly some of us have to put up with pain for long periods – in some cases the rest of our lives – and there are many measures we resort to in the quest to relieve our pain.

Pain is such a vast subject. It can be caused by so many differing factors and manifest itself in different ways, in different parts of the body and with varying degrees of severity. It can also be dealt with in different ways – pharmacologically (through drugs), physically (through physiotherapy) or psychologically – and what works for one person may not work for someone else.

Someone in pain

Some people find relief from pain in the use of drugs and medicines, others use physiotherapy. There are other courses of action including massage, yoga, magnets, herbal remedies or electrical stimulation which interrupts signals to the brain.

However, before considering hypnotherapy to help control and ease pain it is vital that you get a diagnosis for your pain. Hypnotherapy cannot be used until a diagnosis has been established. It would not be productive to use hypnotherapy for pain management if the undiagnosed cause for the pain could be something as serious as cancer or a life-limiting illness – hypnotherapy could help alleviate the pain and the true illness remain undiscovered for longer. If you are sure and have had the cause of your pain properly diagnosed then hypnotherapy is an effective way to control and alleviate pain.

Circumstances in which hypnotherapy can help with pain include when the person is allergic to medication; following surgery when certain painkillers might not be appropriate; phantom limb pain when amputees feel pain from limbs that have been removed; chronic pain caused by a long-term condition; and palliative care to ease the pain of the terminally ill.

If you feel that you've suffered enough with on-going pain that has been medically diagnosed and has no beneficial purpose, causing you to feel exhausted, frustrated and exasperated, then hypnotherapy might be able to turn your life around.

How does hypnotherapy work?
The power of suggestion is extremely effective in helping people cope with pain, often releasing them from pain altogether. Hypnotherapy works by enabling sufferers of pain to tap into the brains unused mental powers and create a divertion or block to the pain. Under a state of relaxation, absorption and focus they can take on board suggestions that give the subconscious mind control over pain signals and physical factors that contribute to pain. In effect the perception of pain is altered so that its intensity or the sufferers experience of it is oppressed.

Hypnotherapy can enable you to:
Take control of your pain
In some cases become completely free of pain
Direct attention away from pain
To influence your mind to release pain-easing chemicals
Focus on the pain and reduce it
Dissociate from pain
