Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is brought on when we have an experience that is hugely frightening or overwhelming that is out of our control. Most people get over these experiences over time but for some of us they can set off a chain of emotional reactions that can last or resurface over many months or years.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD as it is often referrred to, is most commonly associated with soldiers who have been traumatised in war and battle scenarios, having seen friends and comrades die or get severely injured. However, PTSD can affect us in our everyday lives – people who work in the emergency services, for example, are more likely to suffer from PTSD from witnessing horrifying scenes during the course of their work.

There are many circumstances that coudl bring on PTSD including:
A serious accident, such as a car, train or plane crash
An assualt, mugging or physical or sexual attack
Being dianosed with a life-threatening illness
Disasters such as earthquakes or tsunamis
A terrorist attack
Military action
Being taken hostage or prisoner

What are the symptoms?
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms usually manifest themselves within six months of the trigger experience, but can be delayed by longer. In general people feel emotions of grief, anger, depression, guilt and anxiety, but typically PTSD symptoms will come in the form of flashbacks and nightmares, where the sufferer relives the experience over and over, often in frightening detail. Other sufferers might numb themselves and withdraw into work or a hobby, avoiding conversation and anything that may remind them of their traumatic experience. Some people exhibit signs verging on paranoia, where they become hypervigilant.

All of these emotional symptoms can exacerbate physical conditions or bring on stress related illnesses such as headaches, muscular aches and pains, diarrhoea, palpitations or insomnia.

How can hypnotherapy help?
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is one of the conditions that should be treated with Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy before resorting to medication. Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy involves inducing a relaxed state so that your mind can be conditioned to think about your memories in a different way, making them more bearable and less distressing.
