Shopping Addicition Being a shopaholic is not as much fun as it sounds. Many of us joke about shopaholic tendencies but there can be deep-seated issues that cause someone to become addicted to shopping. One of the most common reasons for excessive shopping is a need to fill a void in life. That void could be love, it may be because of bereavement or it could have been brought about by rejection. Whatever it may be, the shopaholic has the misguided belief that shopping is a therapy that will make them feel better and will perhaps fill the void at the heart of their problem. Another common reason is that it can be a way of dealing with stress. Even though the shopaholic may not realise it and may think they are just having fun, the buzz of buying is the craving that puts stress on the backburner. The fact is, after a shopping trip and the initial pleasure of enjoying the items you have bought, the emptiness returns along with feelings of guilt and panic. Soon the urge to go shopping comes back and so a destructive cycle of behaviour begins. It's not only that seeing shopping as a release or a solution can be unhealthy, it's also a cycle of behaviour that can spiral out of control, leaving the shopper with an ever increasing mountain of debt; credit cards, loans, store cards and finance that becomes impossible to repay without taking on more debt.
