Fear of Public Speaking

For many of us the thought of getting up and speaking in front of a crowd is a little daunting to say the least, but imagine if that fear was so intense you couldn't even speak up in front of a handful of people.

These days, public speaking can be a major part of working life. Presentations, training courses, workshops, seminars all call for public speaking in varying degrees and it doesn't matter how knowledgeable or good you are at your job – if you can't speak up in public then it reflects badly on your abilities and could be detremental to your career.

Reasons why someone might fear public speaking include:
• Lack of confidence – either confidence in knowledge, articulation, accent, grammar or image
• Vulnerability – the feeling of being isolated and alone
• Unfamiliarity – being in an unknown place or situation that brings on feelings of vulnerability

The fear of public speaking – just like many phobias – is irrational and we all know we can come to no harm, nevertheless, for some it is a real a fear as if facing a life-threatening situation.
