Tinnitus Tinnitus is when hearing is disrupted by constant ringing noises – and any sufferer will testify to its annoying unpleasantness. Tinnitus can be buzzing, humming, ringing or whining noises in one or both of the ears and can vary in volume, at its worst drowning out all other sounds and noises. Tinnitus at any level can be extremely stressful, interfering with sleep, daily routines and quiet pastimes. It can also disrupt people's social lives, making conversation difficult or embarrassing.
Tinnitus is not a disease – it is a symptom that can arise from a number of circumstances or conditions. It can be brought on by an infection or by prolonged exposure to loud noise. Age-related hearing loss can also be a contributing factor. Sometimes it can be brought on by a bad cold or flu, allergies, a blow to the head or increased levels of stress and anxiety. Meniere's Disease – a condition affecting the inner ear – can also bring on tinnitus. In most cases tinnitus is a minor annoyance that a lot of people tend to put up with rather than seeking treatment, but some courses of action taken include medicines – especially in cases of infection, hearing aids and in a few cases surgery. Another recognised treatment for tinnitus is Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy. How can hypnotherapy help?
